Evolution of Video Games and Gaming rigs

Do you know the game industry we have now is about 60 years old?

In 1958, the first-ever video game was created by William Higinbotham. It was a tennis game similar to the 1970s hit game pong. During the 1960s academic scientists began creating simple games and simulations just as a fun project. At that time in M.I.T, professors and research students created games such as Moon landing and 3D tic-tac-toe.

These games were played on IBM 1560 and the movements were made by using Punch cards. Punch cards are sort of a hard paper with holes that represent digital data.

Video games become mainstream only until the 70s after the arrival of arcade games and gaming consoles with joysticks and controllers. Later personal computers came into markets after Ed Robert released Altair 8800 and introduced it as Personal Computers. As the name suggests, personal computers enabled gaming with the comfort of home.

From the 1980s, gaming became part of the culture by means of entertainment in many countries.

In 1983, 8-bit gaming consoles were introduced into the market with a bit more efficiently to handle evolving graphics elements in video games. In the 1990s arcade games transformed into 3D video games in gaming consoles and in personal computers.

In 1993 Atari re-entered the console market with Atari Jaguar. But the low availability of quality games leads to a decline in sales and production was halted at the end of the year. In 1994, a few consoles were released in Japan. But only the Sega Saturn and Sony Play Station were able to catch attention. Playstation sold out quickly compared to all its competitors due to the availability of titles for the platform.

In 1995 sony released PlayStation in North America and gained popularity over there.

In 1996, PaRappa the Rapper a musical video game introduced in Japan for Sony Playstation platform. Following this success, Capcom released Resident Evil- a survival horror game that became a huge success and sold over 2 million copies within the first year of release.

Another major milestone in the gaming industry is the introduction of Golden Eye 007, a game developed by the British Game Developer Rare Ltd. It gained a lot of attention being the first major first-person shooter game. In 1998, “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” a game that was exclusive for the Nintendo 64 Platform was introduced and it became the most critics praised the title for the platform at that time.

By the end of 2001, Microsoft entered into gaming consoles and released Xbox, a fully-fledged gaming rig with advanced GPU and intense processing power. In 2001 Rockstar Games released GTA III with open-world gameplay and advanced game engine. It was a huge milestone in the gaming industry.

Evolution of Microprocessors with 10X processing power with every release and advanced graphics processing abilities helped the game industry to achieve worldwide acceptance and the real-world level graphics we have now.

Mobile Games

Snake Xenzia is the first-ever game that was playable on a mobile phone. It is probably the most played game on a mobile device. WIth advent innovations in mobile devices more graphics-intensive games were released. After the arrival of Android os by Google Inc, mobile gaming has grown to unpredictable heights.
